We have been into London twice now, and had a ball both times. The train from Cambridge is only about an hour.
Our first trip included a visit to the National Gallery (in Trafalgar Square), a walk to Buckingham Palace, then to Westminster Abbey (where we saw the tombs of Geoffrey Chaucer, Isaac Newton, and Charles Darwin, and also attended Evensong), and finally a ride on the London Eye. Evensong was gorgeous (it is an evening prayer service, mostly sung, by a choir of men and boys, the latter singing the high parts).
Keeping up our Germanic touring pace on our second trip, we went to the Tower of London as well as St. Paul's cathedral, all in one long day. We had a suitably gruesome tour of the Tower, lightened a bit by the exhibition of the jewels of the Royal family. At St. Paul's, we walked up to the rotunda and then further to the Bell Tower and finally out onto the top, outside, a total of something like 550 steps. We also stayed for Evensong and let our legs recover a bit. Evensong was also stunningly beautiful here, though a little heavier than the one at Westminster Abbey.
So, for our first few trips in, we did a lot of the big tourist stuff. We have learned to look over our right shoulders before crossing the street, lest we die.
