On our way up to the Monastery of Temptation, near Jericho, we ran into a large group of high school girls from the West Bank town of Hebron, who were also visiting the site. Hebron, part of the Palestinian authority, is a place of intense political and religious conflict, and often off limits to tourists because of that. Access to the tombs of the Jewish Patriarchs and Matriarchs have been a flashpoint. Hebron has something of a scary reputation.
When we walked past them, Liv and Deb were practically adopted on the spot. Instant celebrities. The students wanted to practice their English, take photos, and ask all the questions they could think of. It was a really nice, even if too brief, intercultural moment.
