We got off the train from Innsbruck after dark, dragged our luggage out of the train station, and suddenly realized that we were standing in the mist and fog on the side of the Grand Canal in Venice. That is a pleasantly surreal experience.
We boarded a public water taxi to San Marco square, near our hotel. The ride took 45 minutes, with lots of stops, but the whole time we were just in a daze, thinking "we're on a water taxi in Venice." And then we thought: "most of the people on this boat with us just see this as normal-- they're going home from work, or school, or shopping. They actually live this way." And then we thought: "we're on a water taxi in Venice." How strange and wonderful.
It took us another 30 minutes to find our hotel, pulling and pushing our luggage down narrow alleys and over little bridges. People would mysteriously appear or disappear around corners. Our little hotel mysteriously appeared to us at some point as well, and we disappeared into it for the night, and into the city for the next few days.
A couple nights later we reappeared at the train station and caught a train to Florence. That's all we can really tell you.
